So I got a new Y-pipe to replace the old one that had completely rusted through ('89 L98). My plan was to re-use my old Super Turbo mufflers. It looked like the previous owner had put new mufflers onto the old pipe, so the mufflers themselves are newer and should be fine to re-use.
It looks like I'm going to need new "inlet pipes" - the little elbows that go between the mufflers and the Y-pipe. The old ones were welded in place, and don't put the mufflers in the correct position on the new pipe. The problem is that everywhere I've looked it seems like these come with the mufflers and aren't sold separately.
I tried looking at the pipe sections you can buy at the auto parts stores, and they don't look quite right. I am actually considering buying some of that "flexi" exhaust stuff, but I'd rather do it right. Any ideas? Or am I stuck buying new mufflers too?
First and foremost! Forget that flexible crap! I do believe those small (about 2 ft.) sections of pipe are available at NAPA or any good parts house. Forget the chain stores for this item. If I am wrong then simply take it to any good exhaust shop and they will bend you some to make it right. In my experiances with buying and doing my own I have found that it is cheaper to get an exhaust shop do the work. They make all their pipes and they buy mufflers so cheaply that they end up being cheaper than buying your own from NAPA etc.
A good muffler shop should have no problem using your mufflers and bending some pipe to fit your needs and it will be cheaper than rigging something up yourself. The higher cost, if you dont have a pipe bender, torch and welder would come from you doing it yourself and THEN having to pay them to make it right.
