Default LT4 intake R and R question.

I need to replace intake gaskets on my LT4. I have a service manual that says I should drain the coolant. It doesn't appear that coolant runs through the intake. Do I really need to drain it? If so I'll do a coolant replacement that wasn't scheduled until this fall.

Thanks,

You don't need to drain the coolant. The LT1/LT4 intake is a dry intake. You will/might get some coolant when you remove the throttle body as coolant runs through it.

Sounds like you need a better manual.

This may be very true. I also went to the local library and looked in the Motor's and Chilton's manuals that covered the LTx engines completely. They said the same thing. Looks like I'd better get the factory one. I know a gentleman that has a set for the 96. I had better give him a call quick.

I'm sure it's because the coolant passing through the TB that they say this. With a suitable clamp these small lines could be pinched off. All of the manuals I've seen, including my factory one I believe, would have you remove the fuel rails, injectors, etc. Why? To simply R&R the intakes on these engines, that's totally unneccesary. Relieve the pressure in the fuel system, remove the two braided hoses, throttle and transmission cable, (if equipped) hoses, piping and wiring as needed. Then unbolt it and remove it. It's really very easy on these cars. Also the TB can remain in place bolted to the intake.
