Default timing question

i've recently rebuilt my motor and have been driving it for a while. the performance isnt all that i expexted(bigger cam, a little head work). i've heard third gen f-body people talk about puttin there timing at 10-12 degrees, right now i'm at 6. could you do this on a 4th gen tpi vette and get a little more power out of it, or am i just waisting my time?

i take it no one knows anything about this, or has there timing set at 10 degrees or somewhere around there.

The important thing is total timing and when and at how fast a rate it occurs, RPM-wise. They bump the initial timing to achieve more total timing but you need to figure out how much total timing your particular set up likes and then set your initial timing to achieve that, as well as tailoring your curve for optimum performance on the way there.

My advice is to bump the timing 2 degrees at a time and see what the effects are. Every car is going to be different even if the parts are identical. In my case, my '89 came alive at 10-12 degrees when it was stock.

I keep mine at 8*, but you can advance it more, just listen for knocking if you dont have a scanner to read the sensor.

Yes, but only so much. Plus when the ECM retards timing once sensed by the KS it reintroduces the timing at a slower rate once the knock is gone. You'll end up going slower than had you kept the timing 0.5-1* below what caused the knocking. Just keep in mind that adjusting the base timing changes your entire timing table at once.
