I see that L31s come from some GMC/Chevy Suburbans. They are a Vortech brand from what I see. I also see the heads flow better than L98 heads. I'm sure that big 6000 lb SUV would really need some good working heads and a nice strong motor with enough power and torque to even attempt to pull that fatbody + passengers and haul trailers. Well here's the situation I'm in right now. Some junkyard just got a rear wrecked, totalled 1999 Suburban with only 32,000 original miles and the are now in process of taking out the whole engine assembly. I see the person who wrecked it was a 50 y.o. administrator from a nursing home so I'm assuming it was well taken cared of. The owner of the junkyard who is now in possession of the truck said he'll give me the entire motor for 10 big bills, flat out, cash deal and tow it where I want it. Soudns good!! I heard from him that the block is a 4 bolt main and they are superior in design to the 2 bolt main design. All engines from that place come with a 3 month/3000 miles start up warranty. Should I go for this deal and put it in my Vette or should I just pass?

sounds like a taker. I looked up the engine and it doesn't seem to be the LQ motor which is the cast iron version of the ls1 motor.
The thing to keep in mind is...how much of the engine are you going to use in a performance situation? The block - $695 new, the short block 1200-1800 new. This is how I would make this decision.
One thing to consider, the L98 intake will NOT bolt to vortec heads, the 99 vortec has several diff sensors and NO timing marks on cover, various small details that can turn this seemingly easy bolt in into a nightmare.Depends on what your plans are.
Damn, now I am split... Can I just use the 4 bolt main block, buy a kit and start building it into a 383/396 and use my ported L98 heads with my new Superram intake? $1000 sound good for a good block. How much would I be able to sell those Vortech heads around town or on Ebay??
