Default Early vs. Late suspension geometry changes

I was reading through some posts and came across an interesting statement.

Is it correct that the 88-96 cars' front suspension spindle assembly sits about 1" outward compared to the 84-87 cars? So when you slap an aftermarket wheel, say a TT2 that fit nicely in an 84-87, on a newer model it will sit out that much closer to the wheel well lip???

If so, my search for a C4 front end needs to be narrowed to an 84-87 model.....

That sounds correct, since the later wheels will sit inwards if you place them on the early cars.

Thats correct as 84-87 wheels were smaller.
