Default 86 performance question?

I am in the process of purchasing a 1986 with Alum heads. It has 95k on it, and was told it burns a little oil, About a quart a month. I was wondering if anyone knows what that could be that is causing that problem? Also what is the best way to get over 300 HP out of this machine? I will tell you what it has now, A shift kit in the 700 R4, and the mufflers cut off with just tips. So there are really no mods done to it. Where is a good place to start?

long tube headers and then the intake is the best place to start. super ram or mini ram, take your pick.

most likely the oil is either leaking through the valve seals and/or head gaskets. might as well do a heads and cam package.

This should get you 300+HP at the rear wheels.

An engine does NOT consume oil because of a head gasket.

It's hard to say if that is a problem or not. I can't locate my conversion chart. How many miles are there in a month?

Do a cylinder leak down test to locate the point(s) of oil consumption.

RACE ON!!!

To be honest I do not know how many miles are being put on it a month, I am just now buying the car. I am still in the process of purchasing it. It is my car, I am just making payments until the balance is paid, I am just trying to get some info so I know what to do to it first. He drives it every day. It does have 96k on it but not sure how many a month. He said you can see a little come out of the exhaust but nothing major at all.

have the owner start the car for you while you stand at the back and look for smoke at start up and when gas is given. the colors of the smoke will tell the story. look under the car, chevys are notorious for leaking at the rear main seals! i like to take a dollar bill and hold it over the exhaust tips and see if while its running if it sucks in the dollar a little bit, which will tell you if the values are o.k. to a point? hows the oil pressure when engine is and and when hot?

The car is two hours away from me and I dont think i will have the chance to do that. But i know its not bad, I didnt see any smoke when I was looking at it, and I didnt smell anything. It is very minor what ever it is. But I would address the problem to be sure. I need to get 300 HP out of this thing, it is a late model so it has the alum heads.

Believe it or not what most people think is a rear main seal leak actually turns out to be a leak from the back of the intake manifold. Got that on good authority.

You can get over 300chp with a modified TPI intake and good exhaust mods, including FL headers, hi-flow cat and cat-back and a few other mods.

Though the '88-'91 #113 heads flow better than the early Al, you could still get some nice power from them. Of course a nice cam and some valve train work would be in order. Full mods will put close to 370-380chp and still have great low end torque.

Take a look at the results of mods to a L98 on my site to see where the power comes in.

You're starting with 235HP at the crank, so:
Hooker or TPiS Longtube headers, a new main cat like Random Tech, and whichever catback you like based solely on sound. That should net ~25hp, conservatively.
Intake work is then needed, larger AS&M runners, a larger base like the TPiS or Accel model, and a ported plenum should get you close to the 300chp mark.

Anything further requires heads/cam work. Something like the TPiS ZZ9 or Accel 211, which are rollers but you can have a flat tappet made to similar specs if its not on the shelf somewhere.

sounds like its not going to be hard at all to make this thing scream. I used to have an 84 and this thing feels WAY STRONGER than my 84 did. There are minor things done to it but man does it feel good!!

Losing a quart a month is about right for a L98 with leaking VC gaskets and intake for a driver

Ya but the guy said you can see a blue smoke coming from the tail pipe after you drive it for a bit, also if you gas it hard you can see it a little better. It dont smoke the whole road or really bad but you can see it he said.
