I have an 85 coupe with auto trans and just started getting interested in checking the computer data. I have been able to connect my laptop to the ECM with WinALDL software and cable. Now I have all this data and have no real clue as to what I am looking at.
Can anyone tell me when to find a good reference source that explains all this data and how to use it to diagnose engine problems and for possible chip upgrades, etc.
Also check over at thirdgen.org for Traxion's intro to tuning post. There's alot of helpful info on that site. It's a camaro/firebird site, but they still use the same ecms that were put in vettes.
do you have any books that were helpful for custom chip burning / tuning?
Unfortunately, no. I was never able to find an actual book on programming & burning, I don't think one exists....maybe I ought to write one......
Anyone else wanna contribute?
OK, in WinALDL the main things you are looking for off the bat are; knock counts, BLM, INT.
Knock counts are pretty self explainatory.
BLM is the "long term" fuel trims and INT are "short term" fuel trims.
The BLM's should be 128 (125-130 is good) during steady state driving and the INT should also be hovering around 128ish.
Enough to start?
