Default Used A/C Compressor

Anyone ever used a used compressor before? I found one and am considering it but am unsure of what to do to insure it works when I install it and recharge. I've heard you should replace the accumulator and the expansion valve. What about cleaning system with something to make sure there's no crap (sludge or whatever) in there? Thanks.

Flush the compressor by draining any oil that's in it and adding 4 ozs of oil that's compatible with the refrigerant you're going to use. Turn the shaft a dozen times in one direction, then the other, drain and repeat. Leave 4 ozs of clean oil in it.

A new accumulator is a good idea - put the remaining oil (4 ozs in it). You can clean and reuse the old orifice (and what you find in it will give you some idea as to what is in the rest of the system.

The evaporator can be flushed with Brake Parts Cleaner and 30 to 40psi of compressed air. Put a white rag over one end of it and blow air through it until the rag no longer has anything on it.

The condensor is difficult to flush, but not too expensive to replace.

Use new seals. Even if using R134, coat them with mineral or R12 oil. It doesn't have the affinity for water that PAG does.
