Headlights Headlights Headlights !! (Question)
So this morning i had my car torn apart changing the gauge cluster lense and i noticed the actual highbeam switch is all the way at the bottem of the steering colum and there is a very thin rod that runs from the turnsignal / highbeam lever all the way to the switch..
Evidently the rod is tweaked a tad, cause i can pull the lever back, watch the rod push the hbeam switch in, then reach down and barely push the switch and "CLICK" hbeams!!
How in the heck do i get that rod out? and straightened?? Any suggestions?
Were you able to correct the headlight problem? I've got a '93 with the headlights stuck on high beam. There is no click from the turn signal/headlight stem. I first ordered a new GM stem (called lever assemby, p/n 25140558). When I picked it up it was obvious that there were no moving parts. The dealer took it back and ordered a "Switch/dimmer, p/n 26035239. This was like a mechanical on-off switch. I had the dealership install it as I was gun-shy of the airbag going off. It did not corredt the problem. To add insult to injury, the service dept. told me I should have requested a "diagnosis". Now the only thing left, as far as I know, is replacing the actuator rod p/n 26012347.
Did you get your hi-lo beams to work? What's the fix?
Thank you in advance!
Take the airbag fuse out, take the knee plate off, unhook the small yellow sleeved wires (airbag), take the 2 nuts off the steering column holding plate, let the steering column ease down. You'll see the rod coming out of the steering column going to the hi-beam switch. Pull on the turn signal indicator and you'll see what the rod is doing. If I remember right, you'll have to unbend the rod a little bit to make the switch click, and there you are. Tilt the column a bit and make sure that you bent it far enough in all positions.
Put it back together in the reverse order.
It'll take you about an hour.
Why do you want to pay the dealer $3-400, at least, to do the same thing with a new rod? Remember, they'll have to take the steering column completely apart to replace the rod, if they do.
You better go look at a P&L (parts & labor) guide for time, it's probably close to 8 hours, multiply that by the dealer hourly rate.
Johnny
BTW - the stem itself doesn't click, you just feel the switch click thru the rod.
