Default All brake experts inside please!! Need Major Help

This morning on the way home from work.

Cruising along, down the mountain.... get to the bottem of the hill as i come into town, go to apply brakes.. ROCK HARD PEDAL AND NO STOPPAGE!!

WTF

I have to stand on the pedal to apply any brakeing force at all.

Was kinda scarry ...

But now i need to know where to start to look for the problem.

Something sticking / leaking in the power booster setup? Fluid is full, vac lines are good. I can hear a slight weezing sound inside the car when i apply the breaks. I have never heard that sound before.

Is this something i am going to need to take to a dealer for service?

HELP PLEASE!

Thanks in advance!

Either the booster or its vacuum source is toast.

Your booster more than likely took a dump and is leaking vacuum. Not that hard of a DIY repair.

yup... booster. For sure.

Check the vacuum lines to the booster from the manifold.

As a rule of thumb, when the brakes get hard to push, it's the booster, when they are easy to push, it's the master cylinder.

Yes, like everyone has said it's the booster. Very easy to tackle yourself. The hardest part is contorting yourself to reach the bolts under the dash. Mine was like that as well, just all of a sudden I heard a hissing vacuum noise then next time I went to hit the brakes I nearly wrecked.

Can you say brake booster. Sounds like you have a bad power brake booster. Easy and somewhat cheap fix.

mine did this and all it was was a loose vacuum line. Start with the cheap and easy stuff first. Listen for the tell-tale hiss.

Ya it only hisses when the pedal is pushed.

Also, in park, the car is idleing lower then it used to. Then i push the pedal and it actually increases my idle (vac leak)

fun fun, what all is entailed if i decide to do this myself?

remove master cylinder
remove booster - from inside, under dash

reverse process.

I've had it simple as the plastic fitting on the end of the vac line being cracked
