Default Summertime overheating...

I have a 96 vette, on an average drive with some hard accelerations here and there I normally run around 190-195*. But yesterday I took her out and went on a normal drive it was 95* out and w/ a/c on I was running at 227*. I thought something as wrong so I returned home. So today I took her back out, another 95* day, and she was running at 192* but as soon as I turned a/c on it started climbing and stopped around 225-228*. Should I have her looked at or is it acceptable for a/c to cause this large of a jump in operating temps.

Thanks,
Jim

Check for carp between the condensor and radiaror, if that is clean, try a high flow thermostat (Robert Shaw or the like) and flush the cooling system when you do.

That is not normal. A/C usually brings the temp down if anything because it forces the fans on at lower temps.

Are the radiator fans running when the A/C is on?

My 96 runs between 195 and 205 degrees pretty consistently with the A/C turned on. That's running here in Vegas with temps up to 110 degrees and higher. Have you taken a look under the hood and verified that both of your cooling fans are coming on with the A/C activated? Without the A/C on your cooling fans should come on at 228 degrees. You might also want to take a look and see if your radiator has been obstructed by some debris. You'd be surprised how much junk can get caught up in the radiator like plastic bags etc. Take a look and let us know what you find.

Yeah, especially if it's a carp!
Sorry, I couldn't help myself. I'm so ashamed.

Thanks for the replies, I just got back from a ride so the engine is still hot to the point that the fans are on at start up. I'll wait a while and see if the fans come on with the a/c. As far as debris goes, I just looked and found one small leaf and nothin else, not too many bugs either, pretty clean. So I'll post up in a little while about the fan activation failure senario.

Thanks again,
Jim
