I went shopping with the GF the other day and let her drive the 85(first mistake) when we came back out i turned the key and nothing almost like it was in drive and you tried to start. i even tried to jump the terminals on the starter and it just spun. i replaced the starter in the parking lot in the dark thinking that was the problem.
well last night i get in the car and same thing. turn key nothing. i disconnected the battery and reconnected it and it started fine. What could be causing the starter not to crank?

You might have a poor connection to the battery. Remove the battery cables (neg first) and clean the cable lugs, battery terminals and the bolts and replace (neg last). Also, the 85 did not have VATS, but you do have a neutral safety switch on the gear selector and if that switch does not make connection in Park, the starter solenoid gets no current from the ign sw.
I had the same problem with my 1985. It was the + battery cable. It tended to come lose. I replaced the battery and the bolts on both cables. I then checked to see they were tight once every week. I was careful as I did not want to strip the threads in the battery. After a few weeks they seemed to stay tight.
ok i have check and double checked the battery connections and replaced the cables. still have the same problem. it seems that if the car sits for more than a few hours it does this.
I noticed last night that there is a loud click like a relay clicking under the hood when i turn the key for the first time and then i hear it click off after i remove the battery cable then it starts fine.
anyone have another idea?? All electrical works fine just no crank. disconnect the battery for a split second and it starts. all the dash readings stay the same so i dont think it is resesting the computer.
It is happening more often now. before is was just every now and then but now it is almost everytime i try and crank it.
Don,
Do you have an aftermarket alarm? I had a Clifford that made the car do crazy things, like not start like you described and just die in the middle of the NJ Turnpike. I had the piece of $hit pulled out and it worked fine.
The other thing I can think of is a long shot best. I believe that if the ecm doesn't read oil pressure a certain number of seconds after you trun the key. If it doesn't detect anything, it won't let you start. Maybe that sensor is bad.
If you want, I could come down and meet you tommorrow with my scanner to take a look.
no aftermarket alarm anymore. pulled the thing before i parked it for the winter. I an going to replace the coolant temp and i might as well just replace that one as well.
BTW that maf is working great. now that the car is out and running thanks a bunch
no need to make a trip down just for that. maybe next time we are both at etown we can do what we did last time.
I'm glad here the MAF worked. If you change your mind on the scanner, let me know. Otherwise. I'll see you at a challenge. I will not be at the next one though.
