Exhaust leaks??
The O2 thinks it's lean (here the code..) and add fuel to compensate.

ok i pulled the o2 and its covered in soot black and grey i kinda doubt it can detect anything, and it smells like its running rich not lean "i smell gas" does any one think this would cause a erratic type of idle...

and i also found that a air control valve has a broken nipple so the vac line to that must be leaking.

I've been going through the same exact problem on my 94 LT1. I got the code 44 (left O2 lean). When I datalogged it the car ran fine for a little while then the O2 started reading a constant voltage and the car ran horrible until it threw a code and went into open loop again. I've already gone through 3 O2s. Someone suggested oil contamination. And it makes since because there was oil on the O2 wires and they would foul out every couple of months. They also said that O2 need a reference air sample and actually breath through the wiring and oil could block it.

I know it’s a diff motor and I'm not really up on the L98s. I did have the same exact problem, the car was running rich and the O2 had soot all over it. I replaced mine and made sure no oil could get on it again and it has been running fine. (This was just a couple of weeks ago).

Good luck!!

It could also be a burnt O2 wire. It happens often because of thier location.

If you haven't resolved the issue, pinch the air pump hoses to the headers while monitoring Block Learn. If the numbers go down, the switching solenoid is bad or hooked up backwards (did you have it apart for any reason?).

Dealer, but it's about $200 to $300. Can't imagine why someone would take it off and not plug up the lines - it wouldn't work very well with the air pump pushing air into the headers at all times. Does it still have an air pump?
