Default Parking brake issues (pics)

Hello,

I have to fix my parking brake (and my horn) to pass my out of date inspection (doh!).

Two problems:
1) My parking brake light won't turn off even if I pull the sensor away or put it against the metal frame (see pic)

2) My parking brake lever won't release the brake (I have to use a screw driver to release the parking brake although the parking brake light still doesn't turn off, probably due to issue #1 above). My service ABS & ASR lights are on at all times due to this problem I think.

Here are some pics with more info. Any advice would be mucho appreciated

Thanks!

Mark

Checked the manual as re: the lights & it suggested checking the brake fluid level. The rest sounds like it is probably sticking. I'm sure you have tried lubing everything?

Mine wouldn't release unless I used a screwdriver to pop the lever, but I didn't have the light issue. I tried lubing it but didn't make much difference. Ultimately, I had the assembly replaced; not cheap. Good luck.

Due to my rollcage sidebars....

I had to bend my parking brake handle.

Sometimes I have to twist the handle slightly so that release catch hits the thing it needs to when disengaging the brake.

Good luck..

As for your brake light...Maybe there is something wrong with the brake system (like not enough fluid)....
it functions for both parking brake and brake problems.

Thanks, I'll look into the parking brake fluid & reply with an update. I haven't used PB penetrating stuff on the brake handle assembly yet so I'll give that a shot.

I would also recommend checking the fluid level first.

I had a similar situation where the brake light was on constantly as well. However, I could manually move the metal piece on and off of the handle assembly and make the light go on and off. What fixed it for me was Fozzy_Bear's idea of just taking a pair of pliers and bending the metal tab so it would touch/not touch when it was supposed to. I did that about 8 months ago and it has been fine since (the car is a daily driver). I guess over time the metal tab is bent by the break handle action. Your car is newer than my 86', but may have a similar situation (but you have to get to where the light goes on and off when you move the metal tab, first, to see if this fix applies).
