Default Steering column re-assembly??

My 85 has a loose steering column. I dissassembled it hoping that it was just loose torx bolts- not that lucky!! I'm in the process of reassembly- will use as is until figure out how I want to deal with pivot pins/plate.
Here is my question. I'm trying to put metal clip back on. Since the center shaft moves in and out, tightening the lock press plate only pulls it out more. Seems like center shaft needs to be secured in place for press plate to work??
What am I doing wrong??
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks

You have to lock it in place by temporarily installing the lock lever. I have repaired the problem you are having, and know how to get it all taken apart. Did you stop when you got to the pivot pins on the side of the column?

Not sure what you mean be lock lever??
I stopped when tightening torx bolts didn't improve things- figured I stop there and re-group

The lock plate compressor I have has a set screw that you screw into the telescoping section locking it. Then the central shaft screws on the outside threads, put the lock plate compression U on and then the compression nut.

I have a complete column that does not have the pivot pin problem for sale $100 shipped if you want to go that route - my post is in the C4 Parts For Sale Forum.

Thanks,

Ryan

I believe you need a steering lock plate compressor to get the c clip back in. Got mine at Auto zone, around $15. I had to ground the head of a spare bolt down to make it work tho.

Put the tele locking lever into the center tele rod and screw in the locking lever; you will see how the tele lock works.

I too picked up a plate comperssor that said it was for tele wheels but had no center screw. So I took the locking lever to Lowe's, got an allen head bolt (small head so the plate compressor would fit over it) of the proper thread pitch, cut it to length and used it to secure the tele center rod while I used the plate compressor to get the plate low enough to slip in the C-clip.

Thats why i ground down a bolt head, to hold telescoping wheel in place so i could slip lock plate over it.
