Default ....to Stroke or Not to Stroke?

I'm halfway thru my buildup and can't decide whether or not to go stroker. Basically what im worried about is blowing up my tranny and rear end. Heads are ported sportsman II's, probably using LT-4 hot cam and crane 1.6 roller rockers, and lt-1 intake

That's all going on the 350, but i'm thinking going 383

How long will my drivetrain survive behind this beast?

How many miles are on the vehicle and do you have a auto or man trans? either way it goes unless you have 125k plus miles I would think you will be fine. I am thinking about going 383 stroker in my 86 and I have done some research on it and I was told that stuff will be fine. But i was advised that it will need dyno tuned with a custom burnt chip will be needed. good luck

Hmmm, a 383 is only 10% larger than a 350, so shouldn't be much harder on the drive train if you stay with street tires.

Sroke it. If you have an auto it will not be bad on the drive train at all and the 36 will probably be fine as long as you don't put sticky tires on it and if you do it is all a gamble anyway. If it is a stick with the 44 you should be fine. The combo you listed for a 383 would be a great motor that will idle like stock. The LT4 HC in a 383 is about like the stock cam in a 350 smooth and should privide some great TQ.

As 65ZO1 stated, it shouldn't be a problem on street tires. Whether you stroke or not you'll need dyno-tuning to optimize the top end changes and make sure it's not running too rich or lean, etc. I wish I'd stroked on my first build but funds were a little tight. I'm remedying that situation now having purchased the bottom end components, just need to find a block so I can get started!

Your Dana 36 should not mind it IF you don't hit it hard on launch...you didn't say what your planning to use it for...if you plan to drag race it the 36 is on borrowed time...I turned my spider gears into chicklets with one launch...this was on Sumitomo street tires at 26 lbs. with a stock motor...only mods were intake, exhaust and gears...

You know in your heart when you make big power/torque the drivetrain will be your weak link...it was not designed for what you will be putting through it...that said, stroke it and upgrade to a 44 when you need to...
