Interesting. I've heard of the 4L80E upgrade but also that it is a bit of a project to install in a Vette. I hadn't even heard of the 4L65E. I like the idea of the extra clutch plate.
All of the parts that make a 4l60 into a 4l65 are available new, used and aftermarket. In my opinion it is easier to add these to your trans than to deal with the issues sometimes involved with swapping in a non vette trans. I have the gm upgrade book and can list the specific parts, part numbers and other points of interest. If you need them I will post them.
The book is written by atsg. It contains reprints from GM. It lists all of the major and minor changes done to the trans by Gm. It also lists part numbers, pics and retro fit specifics. Most of these parts are available in the aftermarket. This book makes no mention of aftermarket though. My friend borrowed it. I will try to grab it tomorrow. Very useful info in it. ATSG referrs to it as the "green" book. The regular repair manuals are blue. It covers 82-2001

With upgraded planetarys (5 gear .vs 4) and clutches, my only tranny failures have been due to a poorly built Edge Racing converter (destroyed lockup clutch...should be non-typical) and later I ripped out the hub of the front end of that same Edge converter (non-typical).
Since I've gone wholly (complete converter) with my local tranny shop (M&M Transmission in Wardsville, MO) I haven't had a problem in the past couple of years.
My setup is totally weak at 310RWHP N/A and 422RWHP on nitrous.
If you don't get a bum Edge converter then you'll be in good shape with upgrades from your local shop.
