Default Cool Collar

Just purchased one in my ongoing battle to drop my oil temps at the track(over 300 last time out.) Here is the website www.cool-collar.com
Unfortunately, the clearance between the oil filter and the oil pan is less than the thickness of the cool collar! Is there anyone that has installed this thing on an LT1? Am I just plain stupid or is there something I am missing? Is there a smaller diameter oil filter I could use?

If the clearance needed is minor, grind down the fins with a belt sander. Sounds like it still could work out for you. Not much universal aftermarket stuff fits well.

I'd send it back. I struggle to believe aluminum fins wrapped around an oil filter (that's nearly blocked from the airstream due to the cat) is going to do any good. Even if it drops temps 10*, you're still in the same situation....you need a real oil cooler.

While 300 is a bit on the high side, if those temp only peaked there, it should not be a bad thing. When the LT1 was developed, Dave McLellan and the engine group engineers decided on the use of synthetic oil to replace the L98 oil cooler (such as it was ) and dino oil.

This change resulted in a weight savings and the reduction of the number of pieces which was a cost savings and the synthetic oil without a cooler kept oil temps at or below what the L98 motor saw.

I attended a seminar a number of years ago in Monterey and I had a chance to ask Dave about oil temps during track days. His reply was that consistent 260-280 temps with fresh Mobil-1 should not be a problem as long as there was no extended times at temps above 280.
If you are seeing consistent 300 degree temps at speed for the entire time you are on the course, you should be looking at a true oil cooler.

The last time I ran my 92 at Portland Int'l Raceway, the ambient air temps were over 100 and I never saw oil temps hit 280.

Yes, a few years back, I had one given to me and cut it so it would clear the pan on my '92.

As I thought, it was worthless. I didn't see any difference in oil temps.

I think I threw it away.
