Last Friday I purchased my first Vette....a 95. It is immaculate inside and out and has 79,000 miles on it. Automatic transmission.

When I was leaving the dealership last Friday, I noticed the engine skipped or missed a couple of times when I was backing up. Over the weekend, I noticed that it was doing the same when in drive and at a stop. I made it a point to notice if it was missing when driving, and it was at higher speeds. But, it does not do it all the time. It also seems that it may be affected by the weather temp...worse when it is really hot...upper 90's.

Can anyone tell me what could possibly be causing this problem? Hope I am not having a major costly repair right off the bat.

TAKE it BACK! There must be some kind of warranty? These problems always come up and if you stick it out you will have a new and wonderful understanding of what it means to be Corvette owner!!!!

Default Thanks

Thank you so much, gentlemen. You almost gave me a heart attack! I am suppose to go to the dealer tomorrow to complete paperwork, so I'll ask for the diagnostic. Hopefully, the experience of being a Vette owner will live up to the euphoria I have anticipated for nearly 40 years

Default Enjoy

I finally got my 1st last November , it's a 95 as well. Wasn't in immaculate shape so, I've been working on it almost every time I come home. Best money I've ever spent. Best Therapy on the market. Dream Come True . Welcome , and Enjoy the ride.

Tell them you think the opti is on the fritz. You don't want to have to replace that right off the bat.

I bought my '95 w/ 81K on it. Later, when I tore it down the first time for a cam swap, I found an opti vent hose rotted off down below from oil contamination. Check this and correct if necessary. I doubt it's your opti though. Check your plugs and wires, change your fuel filter and just give everything a good check-over. I also found a small plastic vacuum diaphram on the RH side of the intake deteriorated and leaking shortly after buying the car. About $6 I think at full dealer rip-off price.

Welcome to the forum!

Take the salesman for a ride and have him see for himself. If they want the sale bad enough and his commission...they will fix.

Did you have an opportunity to buy a warranty? If you did ..good buy it . Yes dealers do make a proffit for sales of warranties but if you had a chance to buy one and did not , chances are its your problem. Reputable dealers do inspect generally, But techs are not psychic. A slight intermitant miss is likely to go unnoticed.

Default Good News!

Just returned from the dealer. The skip was just a loose plug wire! Strange thing happened though....I parked in front of the dealership and went in to talk to the owner about the problem. He went out to the car and it would not start!! Would not even turn over. Turn on the switch and nada.

Sent his Vette mechanic out to look at it. It started right up. Turned it off and started it up without any problem at least 15 times. Mechanic said it could possibly be the chip in the key is wearing out, and if so, would require a new cylinder. We'll see what happens.

It is the key chip. Have them issue you a new key at their expense. it will save $35. You need to get a new key with a new chip on it. This is the VATS security system. also, you can spray some electrical contact cleaner into the key slot. I had this problem and when I got a new key and chip, it was fixed. Need to wait 4 mins after a failed attempt at starting before you retry. that is the VATS timeout.

a lot of the time i have found this to be a faulty plug lead, touching the exhaust manifold or something similar. get worse as car gets hotter, bacause leads become softer

Default You guys...

...are so helpful with your advice. You don't have a clue how ignorant I am about mechanical problems.

It's nice to know that folks like you are around. I'm sure I'll continue to need advice from time to time.

I am kind of like a first-time father who is nervous about his new acquisition. Every little sound is new to him and he doesn't know whether it indicates a problem or if it is normal. I'm sure I will get more comfortable with my Vette the more I learn about it.

Thanks again...I welcome your input.

If it is the key (which IMHO I kind of doubt) they don't have to replace the whole ignition switch cylinder, just cut a new key! Make sure they get you one with the right resistance in the chip. They know how to measure it. The chip is the black and silver piece molded into the key. With wear over time the resistance in it can change enough that the VATS (vehicle anti theft system) won't recognize it.

Man, it's hard for me to break this to you ..... but the obsessiveness only gets worse with time. Ah hell, it's still cheaper than therapy.
