Default Brake Problems

I have a 89 and the brake pedal seems fine on a normal stop, but if you want to stop in a hurry you have to push very hard on the pedal.I have done new pads and had the rotors turned and have bleed the brakes numerous times. With the car sitting still the pedal feels fine. What else could be the problem?

I think it might be the brake booster. The diaphram may be leaking past when you hit the pedal quick. This was the case in my last car, and it worked fine under normal braking.

The C4 brakes are more than enough for spirited driving. I really had to abuse the crap out of mine to make em fail.

i agree, sounds like booster. an easy check is to press the pedle hard, then start the car. if the pedal moves down a bit more then it's working if not it needs replacing

That sounds like a booster, you should get the metal one. Run a search and you'll find the link to it.

I agree with CentralCoaster I had the same issue's with my 86 coupe & replacing the brake booster solved it.

I did what you did with the addition of a complete FLUSH of all the brake fluid and added speed bleeders. What an incredible difference.

Take a look at a new tin booster. It should last longer and at half the price.

It’s a pretty simple swap actually. You’ll just need the basic components like rotors, calipers, and brake pads and then the adaptors that let you mount the C5 calipers to the C4 spindle.
My system was in perfect shape before the conversion and I didn’t like the stopping power of the original brakes, all I did was change to the C5 brakes and a proportioning valve spring and it made a world of difference.
Now the car stops the way I think it should stop.

Check out the prices at www.hotrodsusa.com. Another Vette forum mentioned it and I just bought a new, metal, satisfaction guaranteed booster delivered for 127.xx ( be sure and check out their coupon on the site). Local GM dealer wanted 404.xx and offered it for 299.xx due to my GM employment. Another forum suggests removing the bottom seat cushion prior to starting to simplify access. Just be cautious as the wiring is hot even with the key off (I am told). Good luck
