I just got my '93 on the road, finally, just to discover a prob with the shifter. If I "granny" it I have no problems going from 1-2-3-4, but then the shifter won't go over to engage 5th or 6th and won't even go back to 3rd or 2nd, like it's hanging up in neutral (in the center) and will only go to 4th, until you mess around with it for 10-15 seconds, or almost come to a stop, but by then I might as well go back to 3rd or 2nd instead of 5th. If I wind out 1st and 2nd, however, then it won't go into 3rd at all, just 4th. It shouldn't be anything CAGS related because it has been disabled in the chip. Any suggestions? Worn out stock shifter? Old, nasty, oil? (probably the same oil it rolled out of the factory with, judging by the up-keep on it) I'm already planning to change out the fluid in the trans and put in a short-throw shifter next week, I just want some peace of mind that it's not something major. Thanks in advance and sorry for the long explanation.
I took the console and boot off this afternoon and oiled everything good. The reverse lockout would almost stick in the "upwards" position! I oiled everything, didn't help any, except for now the reverse lockout seems to work right. I looked for something to be broken but nothing really jumped out at me. I don't know if it's normal, but it seemed that the housing of the shifter, perhaps this is the frame you are talking about, would move a little along with the shifter, not much though, just like it may be mounted on rubber bushings? I'll take it apart again this weekend, and pull out the shifter, or what I can get out, and see if I can find anything broken.
Overall, the trans shifts nice and smooth; when you can get in gear; no noises or anything out of the ordinary other than "hanging" up in between gears (it doesn't have any problem burning up those 315 Pirelli's in 1st or 2nd however! ).
This sounds like it might be a Hydroulic clutch actuator problem. Read this, http://www.zfdoc.com/techinfo.htm. I just replaced the clutch master cylinder and slave cylinder in my 94 Coupe. If you replacing these parts and need info just let me know. I have an article I followed and had absolutely no issue with bleeding.
Go to zf6.com and read the part about the slave master cylynder. Sounds like yours needs looking into.
