The alternator on my 93 seems to have died. Voltage dropped and it will not keep the battery charged. I have replaced alternators on other cars, but this one has me a little confused. I expected to see a pivot connection and a slotted connection to adjust tension on the belt. I don't see a slotted connection.
Look at the tensioner, there is a 15mm bolt on it, that is the tension release.
Then remove the 2 big torx bolts (T47, I think), the 13mm on the back and then remove the alternator.
Warning: The wire on the alternator may not want to come loose... I had to cut and crimp on a new connector when I replaced mine. Pain in the ***, if you ask me.
Thanks for the reply. Is the tensioner a bolt on one of the alternator brackets, or one of the other pulleys on the belt?
look down alittle further below and offset of the alternator. you will see a small pulley that has no function other then keeping tension on the belt. alternator swap is pretty much straight forward. one last thing disconnect the battery cable. that fat wire on the back of your alternator is hot.
if you plan on doing much more work on your 93 i would suggest getting some manuals on it, i have several and have always found them helpful.
good luck, have fun and since i drive a 93 i think they are the best one's made...
relax CF just having alittle fun and no need for a flamming
Here's some unsolicited advice. Don't run out to Pep Girls or Advance for a rebuilt alternator or you will probably be doing this job again in a few months. Try to find a local rebuilder that will rebuild your unit with quality parts that will last a long time.
Thanks, I think I see the tensioner. Do I just pull the bolt out of the front of the tensioner?
I agree. I should buy a service manual. I am at the point where I have to begin fixing things. What service manual do you have? Would you recommend it etc.
