1988 4+3 overdrive problem
My 88 is sometimes going into overdrive in 1st gear and sometimes does not engage at all. When getting on the throttle in first it goes in and out of overdrive? If I baby the car out of first it runs fine when I mash the throttle in 2. The overdrive button does nothing at all either. Help!!! Thanks in advance.

Once it's in overdrive it works fine. Everything is working the way it's supposed to. All but the overdrive button. That does nothing. But never had a problem with it in 1st gear before.

The 87 and 88 OD units will go into OD automatically when in 1st gear with little throttle opening, and with enough throttle opening, they will kick out of OD but should not go into OD again until you hit the switch.
Are you saying the button on the shifter does not allow operation of the OD unit in any gear?

if the unit itself is working properly (and it kind of sounds like it is), it could certainly be the overdrive switch. the overdrive button pushes down a thin rod that is screwed into a switch mounted beneath the shifter boot. those switches can fail and cause some interesting problems, not unlike what you are experiencing.
