It was the same on my former '89 corvette, so I never thought much of it. One of the other threads mentioned replacing a vent valve near the charcoal canister and getting rid of the WOOSH. Should I be concerned?? Is this normal???
I'd say it was normal. If it's hot out and the tank is 1/4 full or so, you will get more. A lot of vehicles tell you to open the cap slowly until the hissing stops and it's normal for them as well.
If it's purging at the tank valve in the engine compartment, you need to replace that valve. It's there to keep the fumes (and the whoosh so to speak) in the tank until vacuum is applied which allows the fumes to flow into the canister and then into the engine upon certain throttle conditions. Gas fumes in the engine compartment are never good.
It has been unusually hot here in Michigan this summer. This weekend it was over 90 and my tank was down to about 1/8. The woosh was very noticeable on re-fueling....
It usually isn't that noticeable, but a low fuesl level combined with sitting in the hot sun vaporizes the gas and increases pressure
