Default CA smog suggestions

I have to get my C4 smogged this month. It will be on the ragged edge. It's an 11/1 400 in with a solid roller on 112 lobe centers. Lobes are 268 seat and 230 @ .050. It runs great. I'll take it down once I reinstall all of the stock exhaust. I have to use a test only station too.

I do my own tuning and wondered if I should retard the timing a bit and also if alcohol at 15% in the fuel would be a big help.

Another pain for me will be getting my stock centerbolt valvecovers to fit with the wide body rockers. They will be ground pretty thin. Any suggestions there?

Thanks for the help

I think you're hoping for miracles to get an 11:1 400 with a solid roller with 230º duration to pass smog. I would DEFINATELY try some alky and retard the timing (to keep cylinder temps down as much as possible).
With the centerbolt valvecovers I doubt you'll be able to fit standard rocker arms...
Good luck though, let us know the results.

Don't go down too much on the timing. If it isn't within a couple degrees of stock they will fail you. I had one car fail because the idle was set too high and they wanted to charge me $25 to turn a screw. You can always use that 'Pass or don't pay' gas addative you get from the parts stores.

I have a friend that ran a solid roller with 268 seat duration and tighter lobe centers and was able to pass with a 350 without running alcohol. He was running a DFI system and doesn't remember how much he retarded timing. From his experience I think I have a good chance, especially if I use alcohol as well.

As I understand, the new tests on the rollers are between 2000 and 3000 rpm with a light to medium load. Any thoughts on where in the timing curve and how high a vacuum level I should target for retarding the timing? Or is it easier to just reduce the entire table? Any thoughts on how much?

Thanks

Thought I'd share what I learned. Everything passed with lots of margin except the NO. That was on the edge but it passed too. So it can be done with a short seat duration solid cam and a wide lobe center as long as you pull a little bit of timing out.
