I recently put on a rear Y pipe with crossover and a pair of Magnaflow dual tip mufflers. I did get any change in sound as a result. This disappointed me very much. I'm now considering replacing the front Y pipe without precats. Will this give me the more powerfull sound that I am looking for? And if so, is there any reason to consider the 2 1/4 pipe over the 2 1/2 pipe? It would seem that the 2 1/2 pipe would be the better way to go.
I recently installed a set of TPIS headers and a Random Tech cat on my 86'. I did NOT replace the rear Y-pipe and the mufflers (They are LT-1 type mufflers, and I believe they are factory mufflers as the car was way too quiet!).
After the install, the car is still quiet at idle and when cruising, but it has a much more agressive sound at higher RPM's. It still dosen't have any deep rumble, but you can hear a lot more of the combustion sounds (that "whoop-Wahhhh" noise when you goose it). I installed the headers because one of the precats was disentigrating, so I am pleased with the added sound benefit.
odd that you didnt notice any difference in sound, havent heard them on an L98,but magnaflows really sound good on a C5.They might get louder in time.A 2 1/2 Y pipe and highflow cat like a carsound will free up some power, and some sound.
At this point I am not considering changing the main cat. A couple of years ago I replaced the cat with a "test pipe" and did not notice much "improvement" in sound, so I put the cat back on.
Going without mufflers is not an option where I get my state inspections done. Which is another reason why I put the cat back on.
BTW, I do not have the Magnaflow cat back system. I have a Y pipe with crossover and Magnaflow dual output mufflers from Corvette Central. They sound just like my stock mufflers did. I had opened up the dummy side of the stock mufflers, previously.
