I was wondering if anyone here has done an EFI swap/conversion on their car. I got rid of the crossfire a long time ago and I now have a carb sitting on my motor. I'm switiching back to EFI but I want something that I will not "outgrow" (could go blown in the future). I'm thinking a F.A.S.T. bank-to-bank system with a closed loop O2 option. I have an MSD ignition system with the probillet distributor. Hood clearance isn't a prob because I'm swapping the stock hood out with a 2.75" cowl.
Has anyone put a similar system together for an engine in the 400-450hp range? If so what manifold, injectors, fuel rails, throttle body, fuel pump, etc. did you go with. Thanks a bunch.
P.S. the car is fast as hell right now with the 2:73 gears in it. 0-60 is mid 4's. I can't wait to get the increased torque curve with the EFI and the D44 with 3:73's in it!!
You dont need a FAST system or anything even close to that to run 400-500 hp. There are many cars here on the forum running that much HP, and hundreds if not thousands of cars running 9's and maybe faster using the stock ECM that came in their car.
I know your ecm wasnt good, but you may consider rewiring it to run a 165 or 730 GM ECM. The benefit will be cost, and if you have trouble on the road you can get a replacement ecm for like $100 at any auto parts store.
I don't have the Stock system hooked up... i dropped the crossfire a long time ago... are you talking about getting something like a stock wiring harness for a TPI or multiport system and using it on my custom setup?
The problem I have the GM ECM's is that I can't do all of the programming my self. I don't want to have to send the ECM to someone else, I wan't to sit on the dyno and configure the fuel/spark maps.
With any system you will have to tune it, or have someone do it for you. I am just stating that the GM ECM is alot more verstaile than many people beilieve. You could get a newer model harness, or maybe utilize your existing harness with new plugs and repinning. I dont know much about the crossfire EFI stuff, but the ECM in my 85 was fairly easy to repin to use a newer 165 ecm. Maybe similiar information is available to convert crossfires to newer ECM's.
You could send out your manifold for conversion to EFI, get a 4V TB that comes with a TPS and IAC (Accell) a set of Ford SVO 24 or 30# injectors and hit your local parts store and get whatever other sensors that would come on a typical speed density L98. (ECT, knock (if you like)MAP...)
Choose your system, Accell, FAST, whatever, and wire it up.
Do you still have the stock in tank fuel pump?
I certainly agree that a stock ECM can handle your motor as it could mine. But I am going aftermarket for the more user friendly tuning capability. No need for a burner and eraser makes it much easier to play with/adjust.
If you are going to the trouble and expense of an aftermarket EFI, why arent you going to sequential injection? If you want to go batch fire (bank to bank) why not buy a Painless harness from Summit racing and get an ECU for either MAF or Speed Density hoowever you plan on setting it up. If you dont want to mess with the fuel tables I suggest MAF. If you need a tuned chip talk to Alvin at PCMForless.com he is also a supporting Vendor.

If you use a GM ECM, you can spend $175 on an Ostrich from Moates and use TunerPro RT ($30) to tune it real time. It is fantastic!

I already talked to F.A.S.T. and we agreed that I don't need the extra fine tuning capability to have sequential firing... Thanks for all of the help though guys. I do have to money to spend on the setup so it isn't a problem... if i were a lot tighter for $$ then hell yes I would buy a wiring harness from summit and get the burner/programmers to do it. As far as the fuel pump goes RainDelay, it has an 85 pump in it right now ( i think 20-30lbs). I'll have to change it out for something in the 40lb range.
