I am putting in a D44 - 3.45:1, replacing the stock D36 - 3.07:1 on my 84 with A4 and need the speedometer gear. Can anyone point me in the right direction to a source?
The GM dealer is a good source for the gear. They are cheap. CFI-EFI has helped many on here figure the correct ratio. He may see this post and add to it with part nos. You need your tire size to do the calculations.
Both you guys got lucky. Of the three pieces that often need to be changed, the drive gear, the driven gear, and the VSS, each of you only has to change one item.
Black84,
You have to replace the red, 17 tooth, drive gear with a grey, 15 tooth drive gear, part number, 8642620.
Aqualung,
All you have to change is your driven gear. Swap out your green, 42 tooth, driven gear for a light blue, 45 tooth driven gear, part number 25513052.
As far as I know the best prices on these parts come from a GM dealer. Particularly Superior Chevrolet.

RACE ON!!!
Hey thanks CFI-EFI. Just the help I was looking for.
I believe you will have to change all three, the drive, and driven gears, and also the speed sensor. Going from 2.59 to 3.54 I needed a gray and purple gear. Looks like you need a grey and green gear
hey CFIEFI i will be going from a D36 with 2.59's to a D44 with 3.45's...what do i need to do?
A year and a trans would have helped. The driven gear can change depending on the year, in a manual. Since you had 2.59 gears and a Dana 36, I am going to assume this is an automatic. All three pieces have to be changed. You will need a grey, 15 tooth, drive gear, part number 8642620, a green, a 42 tooth, driven gear, part number 25513049, and a different VSS to accommodate the larger driven gear. For 1984 to 1990, the VSS has to be changed to a 25007308. Good luck. It is my understanding that the 25007308 is discontinued. You may find a dealer with some old stock or find one in a wrecking yard. For 1991 through 1993, use VSS number 10456092.
