Default Carpeting - Help

I spent the day working on the car today. I replaced some more weather stripping and started pulling out the old nasty carpeting. This poor car sat in a parking lot for months without proper weather stripping and it leaked badly! So when I pulled the carpeting out,the under layer of fiberous greenish material was water logged and came up with the carpets... No, not the mass backing! I would guess it is sound deadening material. Here is my big question, I can't seem to find it in the catalogs like Corvette America and Mid America. I should not proceed until I replace it, Right? Where can I get it or is there an alternative?

The backing is very similar to felt pad. It is available at most carpet stores. It comes in 6 and 12 ft widths. Rolls are stocked, so cutting off a smaller piece is no problem. 3m spray adhesive will secure it. The felt pad is actually much better quality than the oem felt.

I would recommend against gluing the padding to the floorboards. The padding is supposed to "float" between the floor and the carpet. If you glue it down and have more water get in, you will have wet felt that is very difficult to remove from the floor.

I did this same thing a few months ago. I replaced the felt with a closed cell foam, much quieter than the felt. I also installed a layer of vibration reduction material under the foam, together these two items significantly reduced the road noise from the floorboards.

I did the same thing. I put a layer of sound deadening material down and the bought new felt at the carpet store. It really reduced interior noise!

I just pulled my carpet today and have a question, that rubber (heat shield I guess?) mat thats up under the pedals and up against the firewall on the passengar side... is it 1 piece going across the tranny tunnel? How do you get it out to change it?

I noticed this 85 I've been working on has a freakin hole in the floorboard!! The entire padding was soaking wet, and it's been sitting in my garage for about 2 weeks.. it was so nasty. The smell was making me sick...

When adding the sound deadener to the rear compartment, did you just apply it to the floor, or did you also go up on the side panels (wheelhousings)?
