If your not showing an obvious gas leak, then it's probably your emission evap system....canister, solenoid, or purge tank valve.

Did you install new o-rings on the bolts that hold the fuel and pump inplace?

As above , disconect the line from the charcoal canister and see if you can blow through it.Had same prob , steel pipe where it makes
90 degree turn at wheel arch was full of rust flakes. Cleaned out . no more fumes

Usually the canister in the front driver corner under the hood.
Try to check the leak because the gas is very dangerous under the hood.

Good question.
Had the same problem on my 86 earlier this year. It, indeed, turned out to be o-rings on the bolts.

You might check the line that tuns from your evap canistor to the tank. Most of the tubing is steel, but in a couple of places it's rubber (prone to rotting out). A common leak is just in front of the left rear wheel - about 2 inches of line is rubber there.
