Default Spark Plug Question

1985 L98 (stock)
Had my plugs out the other day to check them, and I noticed that the plugs don't screw directly into the engine, that there are 'spacers' between them (I have no idea what they are or the right term for them).
It looks like a large nut, the sparkplug screws into that, instead of directly into the engine.

Were those spacers there from stock? What are they? Am I making any sense at all?!

That's exactly what they are...

So maybe I'm running rich, and the last owner thought these would fix the problem?

Is there any disadvantage to taking them off?

Have your heads been planed to increase compression and HP?
They might be indexing spacers to ensure the pistons don't slap the electrodes...

Can you post a photo?

I'm almost positive the heads are stock... Those things look exactly like what dndrsn posted in his pic.

They are usually used on a cylinder that has a bad valve seal or is otherwise burning oil. A rich condition seems easier to fix than putting non-foulers on every plug.

Oh I see... That makes sense then. I dont think I'm running rich, which is why I was confused at first, but I'm pretty sure I've got a few leaky valve seals.

Okay, thanks for the help.
