Default Somethings Draining my Battery...

Ok ... I was driving last saturday afternoon towards Danville in my 87 vette ... I give the throttle a lil punch and all of a sudden i heard grinding of gears or something ... like if it were in my tranny ... about 5 minutes later my baby begins to over heat (I'm in traffic) and my battery was at 9.0v on my dash gauge ... I pulled over and let it cool down ... trying to figure out how my battery got drained ... I'm just curious if anyone has had a problem like this ... maybe the tranny's wiring is something to check up? is tranny wiring problems common on these vettes? I did see some smoke come out of the engine bay near the firewall ... but it went away after a minute or so ... any help is appreciated ... thanks!

If i was a little vague ... please throw out some suggestions or ask to make it clearer ... thanks ladies and gentlemen...

Pretty vague, but it sounds like the alternator bit the dust and you drained the battery drive off of it, only. There isn't much in the way of wiring in the trans. If it's an automatic about all there is, is the TCC. On a manual, nothing. I have no idea on the noise unless it was the alternator dying.

RACE ON!!!

the noise sounded like a grinding shift ... either from the tranmission or could it be my rear end? I was thinking my alternator as well ... I bought a new battery and installed it yesterday around 8:45pm ... drove it around and everything was fine ... around 12am right when i get to my house it died ... so i quickly unplugged the battery as to not completely drain it ... if the alternator was bad i'd have no charge what so ever? or would the battery's life (what it has off the store shelf) is being used all up until theres no power left in it? thanks for the help!

Check the wiring around your starter. Also check wiring near the firewall for burnt wires.

The best way to find a battery drain is to disconnect the neg. lead and jumper a DMM bewteen the neg. terminal and ground. Set the DMM to DC Amps on the highest scale. Then in turn pull each fuse till you find one where the current draw drops significantly.

Sorry but my english is not perfect. I´m from Sweden. Do you mean that I should disconnect the neg on the car battery and there connect a "DMM" ,Can you please write out DMM, between the battery and ground ? Peter
