Well I installed my exhaust today, 2.5 true duals with KBD mufflers. Now, I can see where this setup would sound good on a car that was cat-equipped. But my setup is catless and this thing is extremely loud. Has a very raspy sound, reminds me of a full size truck with glasspacks on it. Down low it sounds very mellow but anymore than 25% throttle and it just screams. I am afraid I am going to have to change it to flowmaster mufflers. My question is, On these cars do the FM's sound good? I don't want it to sound like a mustang, but most mustangs sound really good. That is kind of the tone I am looking for, any help is appreciated on this one.

Oh, mine doesn't sound anything like a stang... but it sounds really good. My car doesn't look super duper or anything, but everyone looks to see what the RUMP-RUMP is... lol If you want an aggressive tone get the 40 series delta flows, if you want an aggressive tone at higher RPM's with out as much resonance get the 50 series delta flows (have those on right now).
The mufflers were 2-1/4 , had some adapters made to fit them to the car. I guess I am going to get some flowmasters from my local supplier and have them changed tomorrow. I took my wife with me last night and she had to plug her ears - no joke!!

Flowmasters sound awesome on these cars... but without cats it will still be loud. It is a common misconception that gutting or removing the cats is going to gain you a ton of power. The stock cats are good for 450hp or so... and many of us who drive on the street don't ever see more than that anyway. Personally I think you should just buy an aftermarket high flow cat and be done with it.

Cats will tone down the volume somewhat and those of us that breathe the air will appreciate it.
i agree on the hi-flow cat(s). i replaced my gutted, test-piped main cat with a magnaflow hi-flow one and it took the searing edge off of noise at highway cruising speed. now, i've got my ears back, and still enjoy the loud, screaming mean joy around town

For you're LTx exhaust, yes the cat's aren't really much of a restriction... Maybe/Possibly you'll gain 5 HP by gutting them if even that.
The thing is he's got an L98, even though he doesn't say what year, if it's an early one (84/85) gutting the cat makes a real big difference. Later models maybe not as much, but still a noticeable gain.
I agree though, A high flow cat (for a DD) would be best.
The car is an 85. The pipes are beautiful mandrel bent pieces and I would hate to destroy them to put cats on. With duals I don't think their is enough room to install cats anyway. I got my Flowmasters this morning and it should be done tomorrow. Noise doesn't bother me as long as it's a good noise. thanks for all the replies.
After doing my setup (2.25" factory style but mandrel bent, no pre-cats, into a 3" Magnaflow cat, back out into a factory style rear y into Flowmaster 40s) I can honestly say I wish I wouldn't have done it. Flowmaster on anything except an old muscle car sounds like a truck. My advice: Borla, Magnaflow, Bassani. All of them make universal fit muffers and I would just buy a pair of whichever brand and get them welded in place with some nice tips.
i have real duals no cat and hooker aerochambers. current tone is the way i like it. prior to adding the crossover which is not an x pipe nor a straight connector type, acually it is a semi circle, it quieted it down considerably. maybe 20%. before that mod it had a nasty resonance and gave me a headache when in car for an hour.
