Replace that hose immediately. Be thankful that it gave you some indication before failing.

Sometimes those hoses just "give up" with no previous signs of imminent failure.

An air bubble sound like the right explanation. If the hose was soft enough where the internal cords would be broken, the hose should swell up everytime the system has pressure in it. A hose swelling by itself should not be a cause for a big temp increase.

Get a new GM hose and install it. I'ts a good time to do the upper hoses too Flush the cooling system and replace with a 50-50 mix of coolant and distilled water. Check the front of the radiator and A/C condensor for dirt and debris to insure a good flow of air.

Good idea to replace the radiator cap too. It controls the pressure in the system.

I had the Same problem.. My upper radiator hose had ballooned up too..

Time to replace the hose.. ASAP.

I didn't replace it ASAP, and then i was driving down the road one day and White smoke came flowin out from underneath the hood. The radiator hose had split open like a ripe watermelon. Not a good thing.

don't wait to buy a replacement hose, or the same thing that happened to me will happen to you. Trust me on that.

Try Goodyear's super high miler hoses. Summit has a kit.
I just got one for my 86, the part # is GTR 5008. I'm sure that they make this kit for most corvette's
