X-pipe won't be as loud as straight pipes.

I think it'll sound good but shouldn't be excessively loud. Have them at least put an H in while they're at it. It'll smooth out the sound and help with low end torque and response.

I agree with Corvette Kid NC and kwik_ta - get an X- or H-pipe.

It's worth it.

and x- or h-pipe will create a balancer for exhaust pulses. in effect, the left bank, when it fires, will create a vacuum to help the right bank better exhaust its gases.

That effect will do 2 things, one, quiet the exhaust, cause true duals are just not balanced and will sound bad, and 2, will create more power.

NASCAR uses the x-pipe, that should tell you something.

If you keep your mufflers it will be a loud car,If you use after market it will drive you out of the car.

I have the same set up on my car, EM Long tubes with Random Tech cats into straight pipes (no resonator) with borla mufflers. I don't think it's too loud but mine is not a daily driver either. I have considered putting an X pipe on to see the differance in low end torque that everybody on the forum refers to. Has anyone actually compared the 2 set ups on their own car with the same mods to see a differance?

This is what I did as an experiment and I really like the sound and response at the auto-X. Muffler elims and a fabricated X/H pipe.

It even gets quiet cruising at 70 plus.

Default Too bad

Too bad there isn't a loudener that could be installed.

The "H" pipe or "X" pipe will make a difference. It does smooth out the harshness of louder exhaust.

I did that long ago. It horrible, lost low end torque and did not sound good. It was on 93 LT1 with B&B catback. Later I removed the straight pipe and installed a X pipe. Wow what a different in sound and no more losing low end torque.

Loud! My buddy has a 68 Camaro, 400 small block with over 400 HP with headers and straight pipes. When he starts the car it wakes up the block!

Default X versus H

I can comment on the difference I experienced using a cat H-Pipe (Magnaflow) and a cat X-Pipe (Bassani) on my 1995 Mustang GT.

X-pipe was quiter, a bit more torque (difference was 6 pound feet) all the way through from 1500-6000 RPM on the dyno.

H-pipe was louder, less torque, but I gained 6 more horsepower at 1500 RPM and had 10 more horsepower at 6000 RPM.

Mind you, this was on a modified Mustang GT 5.0 (heads, cam, intake, injectors and shorty headers with 2.5 inch Flowmaster 2 chamber muffler system.

I had a non cat H-Pipe (Mac) on the car for awhile, but it was really freaking loud. Not NASCAR but damn near, especially at WOT. But at idle, ow man, that sound was awesome. It RUMBLED, and sounded really mean. I would have stayed with the non-cat H-Pipe (even though the quality was ****) but where I lived was going to the rolling dynamometer emissions testing (Houston - Harris County) and the local PD's were using mirrors to check if you had cats. No cats, impound the vehicle, pay to get cats put on after you pay the towing and impound fees.

I wish they did that to all the smog makers from Mexico.

Yes, I have a Power Effects sytem on my car which is basically configured like the stock LT1 system except it is mandrel bent, no step down in size in and out of the resonator or into the mufflers. I measured exhaust temps at all points from the headers to the mufflers and found one place, just beyond the resonator where the temps were about 100 degrees higher for about 3". I took that section off, took it to my muffler shop and had them install a crossover right there. The difference in torque and response was very noticable and as Strick says down below, from about 70 MPH and beyond it's much quieter now. At lower speeds and around town, not much quieter but a much smoother and better sound. The resonance range is now more limited too and can usually be easily driven out of in most situations, only a couple of hundred RPM area, from around 1800-2000 after adding the H pipe.
