I have just purchased a 1993 Torch Red Convertible 6-Speed Corvette. It has 46800 miles on it. I know the mufflers have been changed out. The car runs around 180 degrees to 209 (With AC on). It has a K&N Air Filter on it. The engine seems to have an idle that may indicate the cam has been changed as well. It runs strong, and I managed to get 27 to 29 mpg on the highway, and averaged 22 mpg during my 450 mile trip to the corvette assembly plant. The issue is at idle and when I rev the engine, it is running rich, I can smell the rich exhause and see the black smoke when I rev it. I am not sure where to start. If it was carb. I would adjust the idle mixture, but this is not that simple. Anybody with experience with this situation would help.
I did get my car tuned at a dealership. I wanted them to run a scan on it. They did find that #6 Spark Plug wire was shorted out, and another spark plug was not firing all of the time. I had them do a coolant and fuel system flush. They replaced all spark plugs and wires as well as fuel filter and PCV valve. I have replace the egr valve and the selenoid for the egr. Car runs much better but it is still running rich. What should the next step be? O2 sensors? Coil? Or the dreaded Optispark? Any help on the next step would be apreciated
Do you have a laptop? If so you can buy a cheap ALDL cable from that we can help you diagnose whats wrong.... Or companies like the one I work for can use that data to burn you a chip to address your car's needs.
