Default Torque converter recommendations for 700R4

Hey guys. I need a 2500 rpm stall TQ converter(give or take). What would you recommend for a budget weekend driver? I am shooting for 400bhp, 700R4 trans, and 3.75 rear end. Thanks.

Vigilante converters are tough to beat.

Prices? Where to buy?

Nice ride BTW. Do you use those weld wheels on the street?

ski is the man as far as i'm concerned. i've seen that car in person...he's prolly broken more stuff than we'd ever have the pleasure of workign with...so when he says something works...it works...

vig converters can be had from just about any major shop. the price can be hard to swallow for some, but it will never break...

make sure its a lockup , no lockups = more heat = short life for your trans

i use a vig , i owned 3 of them and never had problems with it , just some good 60 ft and broken rearends

Vig, or Yank make good converters, I feel sure there are others. IMO try to go to a smaller dia. and run a cooler. A 12in high stall converter feels more mushy on the street. Even if you go with a different brand check out this web site. They have a lot of good info. explaining stall speeds, stall torque ratio etc. http://www.converter.cc/

I have an SLP 2400 and it is fairly tight, but works well on the street. Something like $300 bucks. I don't drag, and it has dealt with 400+hp for awhile now. The trans however, well, one step at a time....

Thanks for the replies. I found a TCI one at summit for under $500. Seems the 84's 27 spline input shaft is limiting my search a bit.

Are you sure you trans has the 27 splines? Not all '84s did.

Early '84s had 27 spline. Late '84s had 30 spline. I have no idea when the change took place. Mine was built in 6/83 and was 27 spline.

Also, if the trans was replaced sometime in the last 22 years, it could have been updated with the 30 spline. If you are lucky enough to have a 30, it opens up the options. "I" have had no good luck with TCI converters

You could hire Superman and have him check it with his X-ray vision. It could be worse, though. This guy can take a picture of his, but apparently he can't count that high.
