Then route the belt the way you want it and mark it.
Measure the new length and go to the parts store and order the new length.

This thread kicks azz
I was going to order the one from GM parts direct after I ripped all my AC stuff out. I left the compressor in for the pulley while I look for a way to do the dummy pulley. These are some great ideas guys..

this sounds like a good idea. After the belt is rerouted can you just start removing the a/c compr. and cond. or do you have to drain or purge it first. Also the belt number for this is 060670 right?

Chucks88 and Matt are right on the money. I got my advice from Doug Rippie (I am only 40 minutes from them so easy to get advice in person). Just simply remove the a/c, route the belt around the tensioner the other way. I did this on my car probly like 4 years ago and it's been fine. And, I beat my car pretty severely. I think the size belt I ended up with was a 735k6. But, it was easy to just cut the belt, wrap it around the way you want it routed, and overlap the end. Then make a mark where it overlaps. Then take that to the parts store and put it on their belt measurer. Then I told him I wanted one 1/4" shorter just for good measure. Chuck's pictures are great, that's exactly the way mine is. That looks like my car as a matter of fact, I even have the same intake and valve covers. Hay Chuck, did you take those pictures of my car? Good luck. Forget about ordering brackets and pulleys and junk. Lose the weight, parts to fail, resistance, etc....

On the 89, 90 and 91 models, we don't have the small harrison A/C compressor, but the large nippon denso unit. This fact doesn't affect the belt routing, but is more reason to get rid of that big ole compressor.
Jesse ski_dwn_it can do this one better as he is using an electric water pump. Maybe he'll add his pic here.
As far as belt grip wrapping around the water pump pulley, it's plenty fine.

I remembered how all the old camaros and chevelles etc etc tensioned their belts: with a slot on the alt bracket. So I fabricated an alt bracket with a slot. All the guys with smog pump eliminator brackets could possibly get rid of their tensioners and the bracket the tensioner is mounted on if they modify their alt brackets to a slot design somehow. The companies that make the eliminator kits can change their current design and incorporate the slotted hole idea to their brackets too.
(I responded on the other thread also....sorry I'm late, girlfriend wanted attention
