Default Compatability between ECM's

I have an 89 and my ECM is located under the passenger hush panel. In the later years, it is located under the hood.

Basically, how hard would it be to place my ECM under the hood for easier access. I understand that the newer ones are waterproof and such, but if I can just replace my entire ECM with a newer one and re-route the wires, it would allow for much easier access and not having to fight with the hush panel for a few hours trying to get it back into place.

The '90 & '91 ECM are for SD intake wereas yours is a MAF intake, plus the cabling differs some too.

Not going to be easy. What I did was just leave the ECM on the floor, until my tuning was done and then put it back up in. Otherwise you have to work with the panel every time.

I tried remote mounting and it did not work...too much interference.

If you buy an Ostrich from Craig Moates, you can leave the ecm, and the ostrich hidden and just have a usb cable hanging out..
As a bonus, you get the ability to do real-time tuning, and no more swapping chips! Is a fantastic little box.

The Street & Performance catalog shows everything you need to switch to SD, but is a little short on the details. Their web is www.hotrodlane.cc - I usually just call them - helpful folks.

It is truely awesome!! I used to tune the old way, by datalogging, returning home to burn a chip, swap it over and drive again... Now i can do it on the side of the road, or a passenger can do it while driving! It's instantaneous!

Tuning the idle (which is often the hardest part!) is a snack when the engine is running.. Give it a bit more timing, bit less fuel, watch the MAP kPa go up as the idle becomes smoother... Try doing that with an old eprom burner [] It takes a matter of seconds and you can see right away if you are heading in the right direction..

And to get back on topic, I was one of those guys who ALWAYS had the ecm hanging out on the floor, now I just have a USB cable that can be tucked away when not in use..

I should be getting a commission on these things!! []
