I had a new tranny installed a few months ago at the dealer.. and as of tonite I just noticed my rear back up lights dont work. I'm not sure how long its been like that though. I've got to get the car inspected before next week and was wondering what I should look for? I checked the fuse and the bulbs and they checked out ok. I've got an 87 Vert. Any ideas?? Thanks.
sounds like a simple reverse switch on the tranny. I have a spare "brand new" switch I ordered just before I ditched the 4+3 and got a 5 speed. I'll let ya have it for $20 shipped. I have an 85 vette and I'm pretty sure this will fit his 87, unless anyone else has an opinion
Thanks anyways.. but I've got a two year warranty on this tranny. So more likely I'll take it to the dealer and have them switch it out at no charge.

I wouldn't mess with the shifting linkage at the transmission to make the reverse lights work. Adjusting it at the trans could void the warranty if adjusted by you. You could probably do it, but if something went wrong with the trans for whatever reason, you could void the warranty. I would make sure the trans shop double checks the linkage at the trans to make sure it's right. It may just need a slight adjustment to make the lights work and keep the trans shifter and linkage working perfectly. If they say they can't adjust it anymore then you'll probably have to adjust the reverse switch at the console so the contacts close when in reverse (if the switch is still good). If the reverse lights worked before chances are it's just an adjustment.
BTW, I don't know where the reverse switch is on a manual trans if you have one. The info above is for an automatic. Either way I'd have the trans shop take a look at it.

I agree.. Thats the reason I'm taking it back to the dealer to have them check it out so I don't void the warranty.
First i want to say sorry for the hijack.Second i'm having the same problem.I checked the connector at the tranny and have power.I checked for power at the fuss and it's good. The bulbs aregood as well.I don't have power at the buld sockets though, could this be the tranny switch?Btw I have the 4+3 tranny.
A quick test for the switch is to disconnect the wire plug on the reverse switch and short the terminals in the plug (A paper clip works for this). Turn on your ignition with the car in neutral. If the lights are on, your switch is bad.
