Default oil pump and AFPR part #'s?

Being the sort who hates to buy the wrong thing, are these the ones you recommend for my '89 L98?:

Oil Pump -- Melling M55HV
AFPR -- Holley 512-501

Thanks for any help you can give!

the # for the holley afpr is indeed correct for your application.

given that L98 clearances are less tight than LT1 from the factory, and over time they've loosened up a tad more, and that you have an oil cooler (correct?), i would use a melling high volume pump to replace the stock pump. are you planning on performance upgrades that will wind your usable rpms up in the upper 5k/lower 6k range? many engine builders put a 55HV in. high pressure (only) could cost some power, high volume (which also provides higher pressure) will not, and won't hurt anything either.

Thanks for the excellent info! Anybody know the p/n for the pickup for the Melling 55HV and any other parts I may need w/it?

Well, my machine shop guy who builds high HP engines, said the exact same thing. What exactly is this pump?...it's called a "high output" pump, neither a high pressure or volume pump.

the stock HEI dist. gear is made of hardened steel. many aftermarket performance cams require the use of a softer bronze dist. gear which WILL prematurely wear (along with the cam gear) when upgrading the oil pump with HV unit. however, i assumed your setup is all stock, so that is why the 55HV won't hurt (or help) you any way different than a "stock-like" Melling 55 unit.

your engine builder is most likely used to using bronze dist. gears, and therefore the HV would be a bad choice -- so in this vain, he's right.

My biggest concern with the HV's is not the wear issue, its the ability to suck the pan dry with the stock oil pan. Now most people are not going to run into this, but autox'ers might.
