There is a small pullcord behind the carpet underneath the center of the luggage shade.
Thanks for the insight. I have my engine and battery out and was wondering how to pop the hatch. I will take a closer look at the pullcord. You may have just saved me from having to hook the battery back up.
I had the hatch release solenoid go bad on my 87 (no click, no nothing). It had broken an internal wire at what I think is a thermal fuse. Since I don't tend to hold the hatch release button down forever (and therefore overheat the solenoid), I decided to delete the fuse, and reconnect the wire. Solenoid works just fine now (and has been for the last 4 years since I made the repair).
And yes, I found the Pull Cord to release the hatch (I was surprised that GM added such a common sense measure!).
