Default 89 Vert - Oil pressure

Howdy!

I have switched to Mobil-1 synthetic oil. Off the top of my head, I probably changed it about 5 months ago.

The last couple of times I've driven it, on startup the oil pressure was 40 - 55, then dropped into the 20's and 30's, then while driving it varies in the high 20's and low to mid 30's. Temp outside is 88 - 92 degrees. No A/C, top down.

During my last trip a few minutes ago at 57 MPH and 1400 RPM I was at 30 PSI. Oil temp was 185 and coolant was 174.

I've searched the current records and haven't seen anything that specifically fit my situation. However I have seen that during normal driving the PSI should be between 50 and 55 PSI.

There are no other symptoms; the engine has great power, when I use the A/C it blows really cold, and the gas mileage has stayed the same.

Is there anything else I should check?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Bill

Sending unit, at the back of the intake manifold.

You'll need to remove the wiper motor or the dist. cap to get to it.

Sometimes low oil pressure indicates a worn out engine too. The clearances get worn and the oil flows through everything easier. As long as the engine sounds okay there's really nothing you can do I don't think. You could switch to a thicker oil I suppose. May want to consider pulling the engine to freshen it up with a rebuild. It would probably run just fine for many many miles with this oil pressure tho, as long as you aren't running at at red line on the track every weekend.

The obvious question is how is the oil level??

What weight of motor oil are you running?? If 5W30 you might switch to 5W40, which is what I now run in my 150k+ mileage L98.

Normally my oil pressure is around 40psi but on a recent twisite cruize, where I was driving in 2nd gear and coolant temps got close to 190deg F, oil pressure dropped to around 20-25psi.

Oil level is good; also using Lucas Synthetic Oil Stabelizer. I drove the car to work today and went as low as 15 PSI. Earlier I stated that gas mileage stayed the same; specifically it has been 20.1 MPG average.

Today I reset the gas mileage and managed 24 MPG round trip. City and highway driving. Usually on highway I'll get right at 30 MPG and city 20.

I'm going to make the switch to 5w40 and have it done tomorrow.

I can't see any smoke. I've drained some fluid from the radiator and let it sit for a few days. The stuff that settled was rust and the remaining 'coolant' looked like weak lemonade.

Thx.

I have been running 20 w 50 Amzoil gold for the past 5 or 6 years.

Oil pressure at hot idle is always at least 45-50 and at 2000 rpm 65-70

Not sure I would put 5w anything in it

I have over 70000 miles with the 20w 50 and never a problem

Thanks! I put 15 w 50 in it along with a new Mobil 1 oil filter. Oil pressure seems normal now. Not sure if the extremely hot weather contributed to my problems or just as Bob86ZZ4 said, the engine is wearing out.
