Once again I would like to thank Scorp508 for his instructions on changing the u joints on the half shafts. I did both and everything seems cool. Now I'm getting some vibration on decel and I guess I may as well change the mains as well. Can the driveshaft be removed without taking the exhaust off first?
Thanks
Gary
Doubt it and even if you could it's going to make the job a real pain in the butt. Your best bet is going to be to pull the exhaust off and give yourself plenty of room to work.
Well, I just did this to my 1987 recently and I had to remove the stuff from the cat on back. I let the front Y-pipe and cat hang and then loosened the C-beam and moved it to the side slightly to get the main drive shaft out. There was no way on mine that I could get it out with the back half of the exhuast in place or without moving the C-beam slightly. I laid under the car for a long time trying to do this without all the unbolting and finally gave up and out they came. I'm sure you will need to do this as well. I take my hat off to Movnviolation who got his out without all this hassle! Good luck!

I also have an 89 coupe. Can you give a little more detail on removing it. In my case I'm afraid that I will have to replace the entire exhaust as soon as I start breaking things. Mine is still the original and I know it won't go easy. Thanks for the help.

As I posted before, I have no problem removing my drive shaft on my 89. I bought the car from the original owner who happened to be an older lady. I doubt that she had the exhaust modified from stock, but it is possible. The exhaust looks stock, but poss. it is not!
Just did this. I had to drop the exhaust right behind the y pipe and let hang. I then loosened the c plate and moved it to the side. At this point I then had clearance enough to remove the drive shaft. I don't believe there is enough room to do it any other way at least on my car.
