Car ran fine, next morning start up car and bam sounds like crap (engine sputtering, idle eratic). Alot of black smoke pours out the exhaust with a really rich gas smell. To summarize (over weeks of attempted home mechanics), when I unplug my MAF, car runs "decent". No codes and i already bought a MAF and a TPS (I know, I know :o ). I posted twice and I got alot of good opinions I tryed disconnecting the 9th injector, resetting the engine. etc.. With your guys advise i took it to a corvette repair place. The guy has had it for a month and said he has checked every sensor, wire, (even replaced ECM with and original GM unit and the 85 MAF Burn off relay). I think the mechanic (hes been cool, going to refund my money) is ready to give up on it. I know this is something simple because when i dissconnect the MAF the car runs decent, any suggestions?

Generally speaking, if you disconnect the MAF and car runs better, it is the MAF, but there ae a series of diadnostics I assume your mechanic would have run on it
I had a recent MAF problem which turned out to be dirty and loose connector pins at the plug in to the MAF
You didn't say if the car is throwing codes or if your mechanic has done a scanner on it.
If he hasn't run a scanner (get real time read outs), then you and he may be wasting time
the care isnt throwing any codes at all. However the mechanic did say that the scanner did say that alot of stuff was wrong but it went away. He said he checked grounds. Besides me buying the MAF, he tryed three different ones including a brand new unit (non-reman). I actually took it to my mechanic and he couldnt figure it out told me to go to dealer. The guys on the board here told me to take it to a vette shop thats what i did.
I've just had my run in with code 33 hell so maybe this will help you too? Look in the fuse panel for the gauges fuse and make sure that its not blown. The MAF on my car was tied into this circuit from the factory and I used my helms manual to test from the MAF to the burn off relay in the dash and even to the grounds behind the driver's side head. I had the car tore apart and checked wires till I was blue in the face. On a whim I checked the fuses and this one was bad. With no power to the MAF the car runs horrible and the burn off module doesn't work either and its just a nightmare. Here is an article from corvette fever that might help too. Good luck and if your mechanic is using the pages from a helms manual to do the testing you'll find the problem. Try the fuse first and then do the testing from the manual. This circuit could very well be your problem.
sounds somewhat similar to what I am currently experiencing on my '95. With a rich gas smell coming out your exhaust, it sounds like you have a fouled plug or bad FI. Is the gas smell coming out of 1 exhaust or both? On my end, I am highly confident that I have a leaky/faulty FI on my #2 cylindar. Tommorow I am going to swap injectors around to see if the problem moves with the injector......
