Seem to recall where visible, cast crank had narrow line and forged had wide line.
How do you tell whether a crank is cast or forged if it has been polished so no casting / forging marks are visible?
Scat crank
Scat makes forged cranks. THere is a way to tell by the pitch of the ring if you tap a couterweight with a hammer. One is higher pitched than the other (cast vs. forged). Can't remember which is which.
Yep , part # starting with "9" are cast steel ,
ones with 4,5 ,7 from memory are forged,Different types , weights mainly.
As in 4-350-3750-5700-L for a forged 383 stroker crank to suit 5,7 rod and late 1 pce seal.
The same # with a "9" is a cast crank of the same specs

A forged crank will ring like a bell... Cast cranks just have a dull "clank." The "parting line" is the thin line on visible on the counterweight on cast crankshafts; it's where the two halves of the mold fit. Forged cranks usually have a very wide, parting line if any at all.

I think forged and cast cranks both 'ring like a bell.' ...
No, I can assure you they do not... Put it on a solid surface, like a concrete floor, and the forged crank will sound like a tuning fork. A cast crank will give off a dull "clank". One other thing I'll point out in that thread is that the LAST forged steel cranks installed in Corvettes (or any other GM production engine) was that in the L82 engines which had its last year in 1980. They also featured forged slugs, big valve heads (albeit crappy 882 'smoggers'), and screw in rocker studs.

Thanks, Jeb. I knew that was correct, but I didn't have all the info, years, etc. to back it up. Too many people claimed that their cast cranks "rang like a bell".
