I just finished changing the head gasket on my '85 but i cant get it to idle. I can get it to start (roughly i might add), but with a lil gas it will run decently at about 1200-1500 rpm, but the second i ease off the gas it clutters out and dies. The funny thing is the iac (idle air control) makes a funny sparatic clicking when i turn the ignition off, and when i try to run a trouble code, it quickly clicks and doesnt stop until i pull out the paperclip, yet it throws no codes. Should i replace the unit anyways or is something else to blame?
My IAC was doing the same noise while I was diagnosing my problem with code 33 and the engine was cold. Once warmed up the noise went away. Sounds like you have other problems don't replace the IAC just yet unless you have a trouble code that points to it as a problem.
You have a large vacuum leak. I'd check the seating of the cold start injector in the runner.
The IAC is supposed to click like that when you put the paper clip in, it is going to the fully extended position. This is the first step in setting minimum air, jumper the ALDL pns A & B, turn key on for 30 seconds then remove IAC connector and then remove paper clip....
