Default Torque Converter

Torque converter recomendation? The other day my transmission went out on my 95. I lost all gears above 2nd. I was told I need a trans overhaul. I have done only simple modifications, nothing major. Still have stock cam. It's currently at the chevy service shop for a transmision rebuild. While it's apart I was thinking of changing the torque converter out for a high performance one. What brand and stall would you suggest. If possible I need it for early this week since it's a daily driver. While there I'm getting a shift kit and some better parts put in the trans. The transmission is an automatic 700r4. What kind of 1/4 mile difference could I expect if any? I called jegs and they didnt know the power band of the stock cam to make a suggestion on the stall. They sell B&M and TCI converters. They gave me the number for B&M and TCI but they don't open till Monday. Thanks in advance.

I have a B&M 2500 stall converter and am very happy with it. If you plan on doing a lot or racing, you probably should spend the extra $600 on a Vigalante.

Default Vigilante

From what I have been reading it looks like a vigilantee is the way to go. I've read improvements of up to .5 in the 1/4 mile. Does that sound right? What stall would you suggest?

That is possible depending on how bad your original set up was. I got better than .6 in the 1/4, but my old converter came with a generic, stock overhaul. It was really tight. My Vigilanti is a 2600 rpm stall. With your LT1, you may want a 2800 or 3000 rpm stall. Maybe higher if drag racing is your bag.

Good luck getting a trans from a Chevy dealer. Between Chevy's policies and labor rates, you are likely to get a stock (and maybe not even Corvette stock) trans, while you pay for a fully beefed up racing trans.

RACE ON!!!

I have a Vigilante 3000 stall 1yr old I could sell if interested. Its out of my old tranny that died an exspensive death this past spring. My new tranny came with 2500stall and they wont honer the warranty with the after market converter. Precesion will still honer the two yr warranty with one free stall change and they can clean it for contaminates that could harm your trans. I loved the 3000 stall. I lost a lot of power of the line going down to the 2500. My 1-2 shift at wot was at 5800 rpms and now its at 5200. Im looking for $300 for it

Default Torque Converter

Thanks for the assistance and the offer. It looks like I am going to order the TCI breakaway #242800. Jegs can have it shipped here tomorrow for $462. I need it asap since it's a daily driver. The stall speed on that converter is 2400-2800. How will that do me? Would I need a trans cooler for this? If so how much cost and how difficult is this to install? Thanks again

Default tci breakaway installed

The rebuilt transmission, shift kit, and TCI breakaway is installed. I'm going to pick it up from the dealership in the morning. Can't wait to see how it feels. I would be very happy with even a .2 or .3 quicker 1/4 mile time. Especially since it only cost me $100 more than the factory replacement TC Chevy was going to put in. Should I take it easy for a certain number of miles to let it break in?

No break in needed. Make sure the fluid is topped off and the tv cable is adjusted correctly and beat it like a red headed step child!

Default Good results

Wow, I like it. It shifts like a vette should now. Some people may get annoyed with the hard jerk when it shifts. Not me, thats what a sports car is supposed to feel like. The transmission feels really tight now. Now that I know I don't have to wait to break it in I'll light up the tires and see how that torque converter does. Hopefully I can still get some traction. Can't wait to get it to the track. Recomend the upgrade.

I'm not trying to rain on your parade but a note of caution...I went with the Breakaway from TCI...I did not pick up anything at the track....not even 1/100...nice street manners but absolutely no gain in the 1/8, 1/4 or 60' times...I just don't want you to be dissapointed but I hope you get a nice improvement...I also have a Transgo full race shift kit...best of luck
