Default URGENT: Pilot bearing installation

I don't want to tell the story right now...but lets just say

Anyway, what is the orientation of the pilot bearing?

Do you put it so the lip holding the sleeve that has the bearings in it, faces in or out of the crankshaft?

Please help!

P.S. I hate schucks...

In other words this side in, or this side out?

I don't see why the end you show couldn't go in, or be on the outside. What does the other end of the bearing look like. I'm not so sure, at this point, that there IS a right and wrong. It may be good, either way.

Thats sort of what I thought at first too.
Then looking at it closer, the other side, has a lip so that it holds that inner sleeve (which holds the needle bearings) in place. The other side looks just like a normal bushing.

Now that I can see both sides, it doesn't appear to matter. If it isn't marked and there are no instructions, don't worry about it. The bearing isn't designed to handle any thrust. It is more a matter of where you want the needles to end up, when it disintegrates.

Install the bearing with the end shown in your second picture facing aft.

Make sure the bearing has plenty of grease.

Not exactly what I want to be thinking about right now CFI!

Well hmm, I geuss what I am stuck on is this:
The 2nd picture looks like the front based on the old style pilot bushing.
But I worry about the input shaft pushing the sleeve out the back towards the crank if I install it that way since, if I am correct, the bushing/bearing doesn't sit all the way back against the crank...right? (....ask me how I know it can slide out the back! )

Thanks vettmike.

A quick question for you though, what type of grease would you use there?

And you do mean, so the second picture is facing me out the crank, correct?

Sorry, I want to be thorough, I've popped out enough pilot bearings today already...

That is because the bushing doesn't have rollers in it.

If the input shaft of the transmission pushes on the pilot bearing or bushing, you are going to have a lot more wrong than a pilot bearing. The new pilot bearing will be the cheapest item on the parts list.

RACE ON!!!

PS. I would install it so that it would look like pic #1, installed. I think any good heavy grease would do. Wheel bearing grease comes to my mind, first.
