Default Today is the day

Well, after a long difficult summer filled with some bad luck, I finally have the 383 back in the car. I put 50 miles on her yesterday and want to put another 50 on it this morning. Then I will pull the drain plug and see what type of debris is in the bottom of the pan. I could have made alot of jewelery with all the gold flakes from the previous motors. If no follow up post, it was bad and I jumped off the bridge.

Pete, I echo what ski_dwn_it says, I've got both sets of fingers crossed this time. Don't go off the bridge, that's reserved for that evil 406 block. All ears for good news with the visual on your oil eval

I am scared! But God hates a coward. I would like to make a trip to Beaver Springs Dragway next sunday, and certainly make Vette's at Carlisle. Vette show and go was yesterday at e-town. Sorry I missed it. I read a post in NE section that a ZR-1 went airborne and landed in the middle of the lake. THAT is bad luck!

Got my fingers crossed for ya, Pete! Hope your luck changes!
Any noticeable difference between the two motors?

Thanks.
This 383 is almost the same as the last one. Bobweight is about 50 grams less (big deal!) Exact same cam, degreed in to the exact same spot. The heads are different. Pro ported edelbrocks. The ports are much smaller but yeild higher flow numbers than my old 113 home ported heads. Throttle response is much crisper. I have not yet opened it up. Normal driving only. After the dreaded 1st oil change i will beat it properly. Compression is also a smidge higher. 10.7 compare to 10.45(old motor) Best time na was 12.02. Hopefully new one will touch an 11. We shall see. I almost forgot, heads made peak flow at 550 lift. I added 1.6 rockers for .560 total lift.

Pete, the intake runners on your old 113's are 163cc, stock.....were these CNC'd any larger? What is the size on your Edelbrocks? How about the combustion chambers?

edit: you have 2 hours to report.....1 for the 50 miles, the other for the oil change and getting back on the computer to tell us the good news......you're still on the pc which means you're not behind the wheel......you have to get cracking!

Man.. Good luck Pete. We were at the Show&Go. The ZR1 went through the fence and into the pond. I think they pulled it out with a payloader, then it was loaded on a rollback. All this from just a autox and loosing controll.

You are right Brad, I was slacking today. Car just hit 106.8 miles and the plug is about to be pulled. The time is now. The old 113 heads were opened up 10 years ago to 195 or so cc's. They flowed about 235 @.500 lift on my buddy's flow bench. The edelbrocks are about 175 cc's but flow about 248-250 cfm at .550. I do not remember the mid lift numbers, but they were decent.

Ok, it is done. The oil drain I mean. The filter was pulled and drained into a separate black drain pan. There was metal, but much, much less than previous times. I made the mistake of using the comp cams valve spring shims. They are gold in color as well. I am sure some of the metal is gold flecks from the shims(I hope anyhow). The oil looked good. Minor, minor gold flecks. The magnetic drain plug did not look like a chia pet. It had metel flecks similar to what is there on a normal oil change. I put 20-50 Valvoline race oil w/ stp oil additive for break in. I am going to step it down to 10-40 with another bottle of stp. Oil pressure was over 70 at all times. Since I am running a standard volume and standard pressure pump, I would rather see a little less oil psi. Whew, I may be ok.

Pete, to my feeble mind it sure looks like a so far That oil pressure should drop a good, what maybe 20psi, once you're fully broken in @ about 4k miles?

Can't wait to hear on oil change #2

Because I worry all the time, I decided to cut open the filter. The contents would make me worry more or less. It was pretty good inside. Minor, minor framents between the pleats. Now I feel a bit relieved. It is gonna live or die, but I am gonna beat it like a red headed stepchild from here on out.

That sounds like an outstanding cylinder head . Are those out of the box numbers?
